Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has been declared the winner of the recent election, securing an eighth term with 53.66% of the vote, while challenger Issa Tchiroma Bakary received 35.19%.

Biya, in power since 1982, removed presidential term limits in 2008 and has consistently won re-election by large margins.

Tchiroma, who claimed victory days after the election with his own tally, denounced the official results as a “masquerade” and reported violence against civilians in Garoua and Douala, The Guardian has reported.

The country has been tense, with bans on public gatherings, business closures, and internet restrictions amid fears of unrest following the election.
