In the complex mosaic of the new Syria, the old fight against the group calling itself Islamic State (IS) continues in the Kurdish-controlled northeast. It's a conflict that has slipped out of the headlines, with bigger wars raging elsewhere.
But Kurdish counterterrorism officials have told the BBC that ISIS cells in Syria are regrouping and intensifying their attacks. Camp manager Hekmiya Ibrahim says there are nine British families in Roj—including 12 children. And, she adds, 75% of those in the camp still cling to ISIS ideology.

The atmosphere is much more tense in al-Hol—a more radical camp where around 6,000 foreigners are being held.
We were given an armed escort to enter their section of the camp.
As we cautiously entered, the sound of banging echoed through the area. The guards said it was a signal that outsiders had arrived and warned us we could be attacked."

Kurdish troops patrol the area around the camps where ISIS prisoners are being held.
Veiled women—dressed head to toe in black—soon gathered. One answered my questions by sitting with a finger across her neck—as if slitting a throat.
Several young children raised an index finger—a gesture traditionally associated with Muslim prayer, but hijacked by ISIS. We kept our visit brief.
The SDF patrolled outside the camp and in the surrounding area.
We joined them—along desert tracks.
"Sleeper cells are everywhere," said one of the commanders.
In recent months, they have focused on breaking boys out of the camp, "trying to free the boys of the caliphate," he added. Most attempts are thwarted, but not all.
A new generation is being raised—inside the razor wire—to inherit ISIS's brutal legacy.
"We are worried about the children," said Hekmiya Ibrahim back at Roj Camp.
"We feel bad when we see them growing up in this swamp and embracing this ideology."
Because of their early indoctrination, she believes they will be even tougher than their fathers.
"They are the seeds for a new version of ISIS," she said. "Even more powerful than the previous one."
