On October 26, 2025, during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, Anutin Charnvirakul and Hun Manet, signed the historic Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, with mediation by U.S. President Donald Trump. This agreement aims to end years of border tensions and military clashes between the two countries.

Key provisions of the agreement

Immediate ceasefire: Both countries committed to halt hostilities and withdraw heavy weapons from border areas.

Prisoner release: Thailand will release 18 Cambodian soldiers detained during the conflict.

Humanitarian demining: A joint process will begin to remove landmines in affected areas.

International monitoring: An ASEAN observer team will be established to oversee the implementation of the agreement.

Restoration of diplomatic relations: Both countries pledged to improve communication and bilateral cooperation.

President Trump described the agreement as a "major step toward peace and regional stability," highlighting the role of the U.S. as a mediator in resolving international conflicts. Additionally, during the summit, Trump signed trade agreements with Cambodia and Malaysia, strengthening economic ties in the region.

This agreement follows a border conflict in July 2025 that resulted in at least 48 deaths and the displacement of around 300,000 people. Trump’s mediation was key in preventing further escalation and facilitating dialogue between the two nations.

The Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement is considered a milestone in Southeast Asian diplomacy and an example of how international intervention can contribute to the peaceful resolution of territorial disputes.
