So, It May All Be About the Music…
The 1927 silent romantic comedy "It"-the film that turned Clara Bow into the original "It Girl"-was released without any fixed, studio-issued score.
In keeping with silent-era practice, music was supplied locally: each theater's pianist, organist, or small ensemble would improvise or compile cue sheets to match the on-screen action. Consequently, no single "original soundtrack" has survived.
Modern audiences still experience the picture through newly created accompaniments:
- Carl Davis prepared a widely praised orchestral score for the out-of-print Milestone video release; it remains a benchmark for home viewing.
- Jeff Rapsis tours with a completely improvised organ part, performed live on theater pipe organs; he uses contemporary film-scoring language rather than 1920s pastiche.
- Robert Bruce offers a jazz-tinged piano suite that slips from Charleston rhythms to reflective, almost neoclassical passages.
- Conservatories such as the Berklee Silent Film Orchestra have commissioned student-written ensemble scores that are performed at special screenings.
Because every accompanist approaches the movie afresh, the "music of It" is still evolving-nearly a century after Clara Bow first winked at the camera.
