Which Prophet Waged Jihad First?
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, dear viewers.
Welcome to another enlightening episode of your daily Islamic series, “Noor-e-Hidayat: Islami Sawalat aur Jawabat.”
This is the program where we seek knowledge and clarity about Islam through authentic Quranic verses and Hadith.
Today’s important question is:
The concept of jihad in Islam is deeply rooted in the struggle for truth, justice, and the defense of faith. From the beginning of human history, Allah sent prophets to guide people to righteousness and to stand against oppression and falsehood. Among these noble prophets, the first to wage jihad in the path of Allah was Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him), known as Noah in English. His jihad, however, was not of the sword, but of patience, perseverance, and the call to faith. Yet, in terms of physical struggle and warfare against the enemies of Allah, the first prophet who waged jihad with arms was Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), known as Moses, who led the believers against the tyranny of Pharaoh and the armies of disbelief.
The story of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) shows that the first and greatest form of jihad is the struggle to guide people toward the truth and to remain steadfast in faith despite mockery and opposition. He preached for 950 years, calling his people to worship Allah alone. The Holy Quran beautifully mentions his patience and effort in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse number 14, “And indeed, We sent Nuh to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.”. His lifelong struggle was a spiritual jihad, teaching humanity that standing firm on truth, even without fighting, is the essence of striving in the way of Allah.
However, the first prophet to wage physical jihad, meaning the struggle through combat by the command of Allah, was Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). He was sent to free the Children of Israel from the oppression of Pharaoh, who claimed to be a god and enslaved the believers. Prophet Musa’s jihad began with his confrontation with Pharaoh, calling him to the worship of the One True God. When Pharaoh rejected and increased his tyranny, Allah commanded Musa to lead his people out of Egypt. The Quran records this powerful story in Surah Ash-Shu‘ara, verse number 52, “And We inspired to Musa, saying, Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued.”.
After escaping from Pharaoh, Prophet Musa continued to struggle for justice and faith. Allah commanded him and his followers to fight against the disbelieving nations who opposed the truth. In Surah Al-Ma’idah, verse number 21, Prophet Musa said to his people, “O my people, enter the Holy Land which Allah has assigned to you and do not turn back, lest you become losers.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:21). However, his people refused to fight, showing weakness and fear. This disobedience led to their wandering in the desert for forty years. From this story, we learn that jihad requires courage, trust in Allah, and unity under divine command. Prophet Musa stood as a true leader who waged jihad for the liberation of the oppressed and the establishment of divine justice.
Prophet Musa’s jihad was not merely for land or power but for the triumph of truth over falsehood. His mission was to destroy tyranny and bring peace under the rule of Allah. The Quran mentions in Surah Yunus, verse number 90, that Allah destroyed Pharaoh and his army when they chased Musa and his followers: “And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, I believe that there is no god except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims.” (Surah Yunus, 10:90). This verse shows that the jihad of Musa was not just a battle of weapons but a divine judgment between faith and disbelief.
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also recognized the struggle of Prophet Musa as a great example of jihad. In Sahih Muslim, Hadith number 2375, the Prophet said, “Musa was a man of strong faith who endured much for the sake of Allah.” This shows that the essence of jihad lies in enduring trials, standing firm on truth, and striving to establish the commands of Allah.
It is also important to understand that jihad in Islam is not limited to physical warfare. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in Sunan al-Kubra, Hadith number 17153, “The best jihad is to speak a word of truth in front of a tyrant ruler.” This means that even speaking for justice against oppression is a form of jihad, as Prophet Musa did before Pharaoh.
In conclusion, the first prophet to wage jihad through patience and preaching was Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him), who struggled against disbelief for nearly a millennium. But the first prophet to wage physical jihad by the command of Allah was Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), who fought against the tyranny of Pharaoh and led his people toward freedom and faith. His life teaches us that true jihad is the struggle to uphold truth, remove oppression, and establish the justice of Allah on earth. Every believer must learn from the courage, faith, and devotion of Prophet Musa, who waged jihad not for worldly gain but for the pleasure of his Creator and the deliverance of his people from darkness into light.
We pray that Allah Almighty grants us the ability to act upon what we have learned today.
O Allah, increase us in knowledge, faith, and understanding.
O Allah, fill our hearts with Your light and make our deeds a means of Your pleasure. Ameen.
See you tomorrow, Insha’Allah, with another inspiring question and answer in “Noor-e-Hidayat.”
Until then, keep remembering Allah, for indeed, “In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.”
Allah Hafiz
