Which Prophet Invented the Sewing of Cloth?
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, dear viewers.
Welcome to another enlightening episode of your daily Islamic series, “Noor-e-Hidayat: Islami Sawalat aur Jawabat.”
This is the program where we seek knowledge and clarity about Islam through authentic Quranic verses and Hadith.
Today’s important question is: Which Prophet Invented the Sewing of Cloth?
In the early ages of human civilization, when mankind was still learning the basic skills of life, Allah Almighty sent prophets to teach and guide them in every aspect of living. Among these noble messengers was Prophet Idris (peace be upon him), who is remembered in Islamic history not only as a righteous prophet but also as the one who first invented the art of sewing cloth. Before his time, people used to wear animal skins to cover themselves, but it was Prophet Idris who, by the command and wisdom of Allah, introduced the craft of stitching fabric with a needle, marking a great step forward in human civilization.
Prophet Idris (peace be upon him) is one of the earliest prophets mentioned in the Holy Quran. Allah honored him with wisdom, patience, and knowledge. He lived after Prophet Adam and Prophet Sheeth (peace be upon them). The Holy Quran mentions his noble character and elevated rank in Surah Maryam, verse number 56 and 57, where Allah says, “And mention in the Book, Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a high station.”. This verse shows that Prophet Idris was not only truthful and wise but also a person who attained a special position among the prophets due to his devotion and knowledge.
According to many Islamic scholars and historians, Prophet Idris was the first to learn writing with a pen, and he was also the first to sew cloth. Before him, as narrated in old Islamic traditions, people did not know how to stitch or tailor garments. They used to wrap animal skins around their bodies. But Prophet Idris, through the guidance of Allah, invented the needle and began stitching fabric neatly, thus creating proper clothes. This invention changed the way people dressed and brought modesty and comfort into their lives. It also laid the foundation for the craft of tailoring, which continues to this day.
The famous scholar Ibn Kathir writes in Al-Bidayah wan Nihayah that Prophet Idris was the first person to sew clothes with a needle and to wear stitched garments. This shows that Allah blessed him with unique skills and understanding that helped in the progress of mankind. His ability to sew cloth was not just a worldly skill but also a divine blessing, as it helped people to maintain modesty and dignity, values that Islam greatly emphasizes.
The Holy Quran guides us about the importance of clothing and modesty in Surah Al-A‘raf, verse number 26, where Allah says, “O children of Adam! We have bestowed upon you clothing to cover your private parts and for adornment, but the clothing of righteousness is the best.” (Surah Al-A‘raf, 7:26). This verse shows that clothing is a gift from Allah that brings honor and decency, and it also symbolizes spiritual purity. The work of Prophet Idris in inventing the sewing of cloth was, therefore, not merely a material discovery but a divine contribution to human moral development.
It is also narrated in various hadith and historical sources that Prophet Idris was a man who worked with his own hands and never relied on others. According to Tafsir Ibn Abbas, Prophet Idris used to sew clothes and glorify Allah with every stitch he made. With each movement of the needle, he would remember Allah, saying words of praise. This shows how deeply he combined his worldly work with spiritual devotion, setting an example for all believers that even worldly activities can become acts of worship if done with sincere intention and remembrance of Allah.
Prophet Idris (peace be upon him) was also known for his deep knowledge of astronomy and mathematics. He was among the first to teach people about writing, measurement, and calculation. These skills helped societies grow in order and discipline. The combination of his intellectual knowledge and practical craftsmanship made him a symbol of wisdom and progress among the early generations of mankind.
His life and teachings remind us that every skill, whether it is sewing, writing, or inventing, becomes a form of worship when it is done for the benefit of humanity and in obedience to Allah. Prophet Idris showed the importance of self-reliance, creativity, and hard work. He proved that earning through one’s own hands and using knowledge for good are beloved acts in the sight of Allah. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith number 2072, “No one ever ate better food than that which he earned with the labor of his own hands.”
Therefore, the invention of sewing by Prophet Idris (peace be upon him) was not just a technical advancement but a lesson in faith, modesty, and dignity. Through this divine guidance, he taught humanity how to cover themselves with grace, work with devotion, and remember Allah in every action. His story continues to inspire us to be thankful for the blessings of knowledge and to use our skills for the service of mankind and the pleasure of our Creator.
In conclusion, Prophet Idris (peace be upon him) stands as a shining figure in human history, being the first to introduce the sewing of cloth. His invention reflects not only intelligence but also divine wisdom. Allah raised him to a high position, as mentioned in the Holy Quran, and his example reminds us that every innovation guided by faith can bring light to humanity and closeness to Allah.
We pray that Allah Almighty grants us the ability to act upon what we have learned today.
O Allah, increase us in knowledge, faith, and understanding.
O Allah, fill our hearts with Your light and make our deeds a means of Your pleasure. Ameen.
See you tomorrow, Insha’Allah, with another inspiring question and answer in “Noor-e-Hidayat.”
Until then, keep remembering Allah, for indeed, “In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.”
Allah Hafiz
