Brooklyn drill rapper Sheff G reported to authorities Wednesday morning to start serving a five-year prison term after accepting a plea deal in a gang conspiracy case.

Prosecutors had argued for a 20-year sentence, but the judge reduced it, pointing out that Sheff G had never been proven to directly commit any shootings. Instead, he will serve five years in prison, followed by five years of supervision after his release.

The rapper, born Michael Williams, entered court alongside his girlfriend, family, and supporters. Judge Danny Chun acknowledged that Williams had followed all parole conditions during the past year and a half and had been focused on advancing his music career. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, stressed that the outcome could have been far harsher.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the 25-year-old both a trailblazer of Brooklyn drill and a “gangland godfather.” Williams was indicted in 2023 as one of 32 alleged members of the “8-Trey Crips” and “9 Ways Gang” in a sweeping 140-count conspiracy case that also implicated fellow drill star Sleepy Hallow.

Despite his legal troubles, Sheff G’s career has flourished. He and Sleepy Hallow recently completed a sold-out 18-city tour, launched a label, signed a major deal, and earned gold and platinum plaques. Sheff G noted that while drill music is often linked to violence, his shows have remained safe and peaceful.

Beyond music, Williams has tried to steer youth away from gang life, speaking at the United Nations and state legislatures. He admits the journey will be difficult but says he’s committed to staying out of the streets for good.

In 2024, Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow even appeared at a Donald Trump rally in the Bronx, despite facing serious charges at the time. While presidents can pardon federal crimes, Sheff G’s conviction is a state case, meaning that option doesn’t apply.

For now, he’ll spend time at Riker’s Island before being transferred upstate to serve the remainder of his sentence.
