New owner Bill Chisholm has pledged not to disrupt the success built by the group that secured two NBA championships over the past 23 years.
“Our goal is simple: win championships and hang as many banners as possible,” Chisholm said during Thursday’s press conference, where he appeared alongside former lead owner Wyc Grousbeck, team president Rich Gotham, and basketball operations president Brad Stevens. “I’ll do whatever it takes—whatever the Celtics need from me.”
A Massachusetts native who built his fortune in private equity, Chisholm is heading a group that purchased the team for at least $6.1 billion — a record-setting sum for an American professional sports franchise. The NBA gave unanimous approval to the deal last month.
Chisholm, a lifelong Celtics fan, said the chance to invest in his favorite team was irresistible. “The Celtics have been a source of joy my entire life,” he said. “I feel I can contribute something meaningful here. This was a dream opportunity — one I couldn’t let pass me by.”
