Zohran Mamdani has supported legislation to raise car registration fees based on a vehicle's weight, making heavier vehicles more expensive to register.

New Yorkers who think this won’t affect them just because they don’t own a car should think again. This impacts not only large businesses, but also the countless small ones that provide everyday services — from car services and food deliveries to plumbers, electricians, and painters.

The proposed system would have a graduated fee, with lighter cars paying less and heavier vehicles paying significantly more per pound.

As these businesses face higher vehicle registration fees, those added costs will inevitably be passed on to customers. On top of paying tolls and congestion pricing, they’ll now have to absorb the increased registration fees based on their vehicles’ weight.
