Google has informed House lawmakers that it plans to restore YouTube accounts the Biden administration allegedly pressured the company to remove over COVID-19–related content.
Alphabet’s chief counsel, Daniel Donovan, told the House Judiciary Committee that the administration created a “political climate” aimed at influencing how tech platforms handled what it labeled as misinformation. He wrote that it is “unacceptable” for any government, including the Biden administration, to dictate how Alphabet moderates content and emphasized the company’s ongoing defense of free speech under the First Amendment.
Accounts belonging to figures such as FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, White House counterterrorism chief Sebastian Gorka, and “War Room” host Steve Bannon had been banned for repeated violations of policies on COVID-19 and election integrity. Donovan said those accounts will now be allowed back on the platform.
He also stated that YouTube never banned posts about the origins of COVID-19 and has never run a fact-checking program. Donovan added that the platform is committed to protecting free expression, welcoming a diversity of viewpoints, and recognizing the reach and influence of conservative voices.
Alphabet also thanked Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and his panel for their investigation into potential First Amendment violations on its platforms.
