A 30-year-old man accused of fatally attacking his sister in a Lynn, Massachusetts apartment on Sunday was on probation at the time, prosecutors said.

Joshua Smith appeared in Lynn District Court on Monday, facing charges of murder and kidnapping. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf. Both sides agreed he should remain held without bail pending a probable cause hearing on October 14.

The victim, 38-year-old Michelle Knox, was discovered dead just after 1 a.m. Sunday when police responded to a call on Newhall Street. Prosecutors said Smith killed her at the apartment where he lived with his father but did not share specific details about the killing during the arraignment.

When officers arrived, Smith was reportedly outside making statements admitting to killing his sister, prosecutors added. The judge ruled that Smith violated probation from a previous case.

Defense attorney Michael Phelan told reporters that Smith is familiar with the legal system but declined to explain the probation circumstances. Phelan said he was still reviewing case details and could not comment on what might have happened.

A longtime resident, Kenji Taylor, said he woke up to police sirens and flashing lights early Sunday. “I heard the sirens, saw blue lights, and just wanted to make sure everyone was OK,” he said.

The judge ordered the case documents sealed and barred Smith from contacting several family members.
