Hundreds packed Harvard Square on Friday as YouTube star Darren “IShowSpeed” Watkins Jr. made a surprise visit, sparking selfies, chants, and excitement. The 20-year-old streamer, with tens of millions of followers for his high-energy, unpredictable content, was flanked by bodyguards as he danced outside the Malkin Athletic Center, played dice with students at the Owl final club, and posed outside the Harvard Lampoon, where crowds spilled into the street.

He joined the Harvard Krokodiloes for a musical tribute and kicked with Hasty Pudding members, who gave him a gift bag. The visit was streamed live as part of his 35-day “Speed Does America” tour. Before arriving, he wore a Harvard sweatshirt and glasses, joking he looked “nerdy.” At the Lampoon around 4:45 p.m., he announced he was “here for class” and was later made an “honorary member.”

Throughout his campus tour, Watkins quizzed fans with math and science questions like, “What’s the perimeter of a five-edge square?” adding his signature humor. At one point, he visited a dorm in Ridgely Hall, joking he and his crew were now “super Harvard students.” On his livestream, he waved to cheering crowds and quipped about studying economics: “If you buy a stock, it may rise in value. Just simple math.”

This isn’t the first viral personality at Harvard—YouTuber JiDion did a similar stunt in 2022, crashing classes and meeting fans.
