Donald Trump Says "Whole Epstein Thing" Is A Democratic "Hoax"

The Trump administration spent weeks facing criticism over its handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. As Congress left for its August recess, Trump’s team sought ways to regain control of the narrative.

One option was releasing audio and transcripts from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate later convicted on sex trafficking charges. Officials debated whether to redact victims’ names and whether those edits would spark accusations of a cover-up.

On Friday, with the Justice Department preparing to send Epstein-related documents to Congress, the administration posted the Maxwell materials online. The move shifted media focus away from FBI searches of ex-national security adviser John Bolton’s home and back to a case Trump once said got too much attention.

The decision divided officials. Some warned it would revive the scandal, while others argued releasing the files would show transparency. A challenge was that Maxwell named previously unknown victims, requiring heavy redactions.

The Justice Department had been preparing the files since early August. Trump publicly supported full disclosure, saying, “Give them everything you can. Innocent people shouldn’t be hurt, but I support total openness.”

Maxwell told Blanche she never saw Trump act inappropriately with Epstein, though critics note she had incentives to protect him. The controversy continues as the House Oversight Committee reviews thousands of pages for further release.
