Faith and Wisdom: Taming the Tongue

The Epistle of James is one of the most practical and challenging books in Scripture—a call for believers to live out genuine faith in light of God’s grace through Christ. In this sermon from James 3:1–18, Pastor Jason Boothe of Redeemer Church of Piketon, Ohio, continues the series Faith Displayed with a message titled “Faith and Wisdom: Taming the Tongue.”

In the first two chapters, James has already shown us that true faith endures trials with joy and that faith without works is dead—useless to anyone around us. Now, in chapter 3, he addresses an area that affects every follower of Christ: our words.

Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). What we say reveals what’s in our hearts. James reminds us that the tongue has both the power to destroy and the power to bless, and only the wisdom from above can bring our speech under godly control.

Our words matter. They can steer hearts toward God or away from Him. May the Lord give us hearts filled with heavenly wisdom so that our speech reflects His grace, truth, and love.
