A long-time deputy with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has suddenly retired after a fatal shooting. On Sept. 23, the office responded to multiple calls at a condo complex in Deep Creek. First the homeowner was accused of causing damage, then later allegedly assaulted a neighbor. Body-cam footage shows Deputy Timothy Poole confronting the man, identified as 50-year-old Daniel Scott Burch, and shooting him at the door of his unit. Burch died Sept. 25. Poole—who served 22 years—submitted his retirement. The sheriff’s office says the investigation will proceed regardless of Poole’s departure and internal findings will soon go to the state attorney.
