In 1935, to coordinate with the Central Red Army's Long March, Fang Zhimin was ordered to lead the Red 10th Army Corps on a direct thrust into the Kuomintang heartland. A panicked Chiang Kai-shek dispatched massive forces to pursue and intercept them. Because they were operating in enemy-occupied territory, resupplying the Red Army was extremely difficult. Fang Zhimin decided to ambush Wang Yaowu's Independent 1st Brigade, which was eager for meritorious service, at Tanjiaqiao.

However, the corps commander, Liu Chouxi, was headstrong and autocratic. Ignoring strong opposition, he ordered the newly formed 20th Division to lead the main assault. As a result, due to the new recruits' extreme nervousness, a rifle discharged prematurely, turning the ambush into a pitched battle and resulting in disastrous losses. The Red Army's youngest corps commander at the time—the valiant 22-year-old general Xun Huaizhou—was shot and killed.
