In the aftermath of the war, the U.S. launched Operation Paperclip, secretly bringing over 1,600 German scientists, engineers, and technicians to work for the government. Many had ties to the Nazi regime. At the same time, Nazi war criminals escaped Europe through “ratlines” secret networks often supported by the Catholic Church. Bishop Alois Hudal, a pro-Nazi Austrian in Rome, helped fugitives like Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele by providing travel documents and Vatican-backed Red Cross passports, allowing them to flee to countries in South America.
Many of these Nazis happened to earn honorary titles within the Knights of Malta. Incidentally, in 1933, the Vatican signed the Reichskonkordat with Nazi Germany, which protected Catholic institutions but also gave Hitler international legitimacy. The Vatican largely stayed silent on Nazi crimes during the war.

Despite global outrage and calls for accountability, many of these crimes continue to be covered up. The Vatican, due to its immense wealth, political clout, and status as a sovereign state, often avoids serious consequences. High-ranking officials implicated in abuse scandals have quietly resigned, been reassigned, or protected under diplomatic immunity. Rather than being held accountable, the institution frequently benefits from settlements, hush money, and legal loopholes that keep the full truth from emerging. It is a fortress of impunity.

Far from being a sanctuary of peace and holiness, the Vatican operates like a state within a state-insulated from international law, protected by tradition, and bolstered by centuries of unchallenged authority. Its charitable operations and religious outreach serve as convenient façades, offering the perfect cover for darker, more sinister motives.
