Cranston, RI - A man suspected of breaking into a Cranston home and trying to break into others was arrested Thursday after a brief standoff at a fast food restaurant.

Thu Chau, 38, appeared in court Friday morning to face several charges.

Cranston police said they were called to the area of 1111 Cranston St. just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday for reports of a man armed with a knife running in and out of traffic and attempting to open car doors.

Witnesses told police the suspect went into the Taco Bell, where he barricaded himself inside the walk-in freezer. Officers evacuated the restaurant and set up a perimeter for public safety.

After Chau ignored orders to surrender, police said they went into the freezer and arrested him after a brief struggle. Inside, officers found a large kitchen knife believed to be the one Chau was wielding.

While on scene, police got a call from someone at a home on Chestnut Hill Avenue, who said a man had broken in by forcing his way through the front door. Police said the juvenile, who was home alone, brandished a knife and scared off the suspect, who matched the description of the man arrested at Taco Bell.

Police reviewed surveillance footage, and further investigation showed Chau allegedly tried to get inside other homes on Chestnut Hill Avenue earlier in the day.

No injuries were reported.

Chau has previously been arrested five times in Rhode Island, according to police. They also said they’re working with ICE since Chau is a Vietnamese national who was ordered for deportation in Rhode Island in 2007 and Maine in 2020.

Chau was arraigned Friday on two counts of attempted breaking and entering a dwelling without consent and single counts of breaking and entering a dwelling without consent, vandalism, weapons other than firearms prohibited, obstructing an officer in the execution of duty, and disorderly conduct.

“Someone broke into my house,” Chau said in court, trying to explain himself to the judge.

No plea was entered, and his bail was set at $50,000 with surety. He’s due back in court in January
