Gunfire erupted at a U.S. Coast Guard base on Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California, around 10 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, after a U-Haul truck attempted to back into the facility. The vehicle was observed reversing toward the entrance, prompting Coast Guard personnel to issue verbal warnings, which the driver ignored. In response to what officials described as a direct threat, law enforcement officers opened fire. Video footage captured by KTVU showed approximately 10 seconds of gunfire during the incident.

Two individuals were struck by gunfire: the driver of the U-Haul and a bystander. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed the driver was wounded in the stomach and was being held for a mental health evaluation, while the bystander was treated for injuries caused by a fragment and later released from the hospital. The truck fled the scene after the shooting.

The incident occurred hours after protests against federal immigration enforcement took place at the same location, sparked by President Donald Trump’s previously announced plan to deploy federal agents to San Francisco—a plan that was later called off following discussions with local leaders. Although tensions had eased after the announcement, a small group of demonstrators remained when the shooting occurred.

The FBI has taken over the investigation into the shooting. Coast Guard Island, a 67-acre federally owned facility established in 1913, is restricted to authorized personnel and serves as Base Alameda, supporting Coast Guard operations across the West Coast.
