NEW JERUSALEM AND ITS GARDEN signifies the completion of God’s plan for man even before his creation of the Garden of Eden and the appointment of Earth’s ancient city of Salem. (Ephesians 1)

The heavenly NEW JERUSALEM, for one thing, is the future seat of God’s Government forever. (Psalm 103:19) The offspring of David ruled in the Millennium; the root of David now sits with God on the Throne in the Eternal Ages. (Revelation 22:16)

Chapter 22 Verses 12-21… Jesus returns to the scene, having stepped aside as John was given visions and words from Angels. His Words of threats and promises to the redeemed hearers, and readers of this particular Book, are real and weighty.

The ‘Bride’ City replaces forever the millennial first heaven’s Tabernacle and the earthly Temple as the place of worship… as the Throne of God and the Lamb then becomes the eternal memorial of His reconciling all created things with God as the City’s/Temple’s single centerpiece of worship. “….and his servants (His redeemed overcomers, as its priests and citizens, shall replace those of the old economies and) shall serve him (what wonderous work this shall eternally be): And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. (Exodus 28:36) And there shall be no night there (within the City… as opposed to the New Earth with its Sun and Moon in day and night-12 month cycles) as its citizens need no rest, being of the same spiritual body as the Lamb - 1st Corinthians 15:40-49); and they need no candle neither light of the sun (albeit the New Sun’s rays shall surely fall upon it); for the Lord God giveth them light (glorious inherent light independent of the Sun): and they shall reign for ever and ever ( in these last words, it is made clear there will be rulers and subjects forever; those who are victorious in this life will rule actively over the Nations both in the Millennium and then on into the Eternal ages. Revelation 2:26; 12:5; 21:24; 22:3b-5)

How should we take the descriptions written of the ‘City’ and its Garden? Figuratively or literally? Should we spiritualize the words and their future existence, or interpret them as literal? Was the Garden of Genesis figurative or literal? Was the Tree of Life in that Garden figurative or literal? If they are to be taken to be literal, there is no reason to spiritualize these.

Genesis’ story establishes the reality of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil by its description of detail in the temptation of Eve and her partaking of it. It being that the tree’s fruit was good for food and pleasant to the physical eye and she did take and eat. It stands that the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden is then as real and capable of being partaken of as food as well. This is not to say that the “Tree of Life” is not spoken of figuratively in Scripture. (Proverbs 11:30;3:13,18) And is depicted typically as the ‘incorruptible’ wooden table (being covered with gold) with its two rows of 6 loafs of shew-bread being typical of the literal 12 “…manner of fruits..”. Its bread being laid in two rows is typical of “…on either side of the river…”
The figurative speaks to the meaningfulness of the literal Tree and River.

In the City of Jerusalem and the New Earth, there is the return to God’s first design for man’s sustenance; that of the fruit of trees and rivers of water.

In the Millennial Age, there is the future literal depiction of that which will be found outside the earthly City of Jerusalem, that is typical of that which will be inside the Heavenly City of the Eternal Ages. “And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” [Ezekiel 47:12]

In the eternal City of New Jerusalem, we see the similar reality of the “…pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits (as the shew-bread in the type was set aside for the priests; the sons of Arron, so the fruits are set....
