Why Some Marriage Problems Never Go Away (and That’s Okay)

In every marriage, there are two types of problems—solvable and perpetual.
Solvable problems are the ones that can be fixed… if you have the right tools. But perpetual problems? Those are personality differences, quirks, or values that aren’t likely to change.

For example, I’ve accepted that Jeff will never be the person who immediately puts things away. And he’s learned to live with my need for order and timeliness. We don’t fight about it anymore—we laugh about it. That’s the power of acceptance.

The difference between couples who thrive and those who spiral is how they handle recurring problems. When you stop trying to “win” the argument and start trying to understand each other, conflict becomes connection.

If your marriage keeps looping through the same frustrations, it doesn’t mean it’s broken—it means you need a new strategy. That’s exactly what I teach in Marriage in Bloom, a six-month intensive to help couples build the skills to work through both solvable and perpetual problems with grace and understanding.
