Dallas Church's Rainbow Steps & Should Christians be Pacifists? Does Animal Suffering Disprove God?
Today on the Ask A Christian Podcast, we're tackling three massive topics pulled from the headlines and from the core of Christian theology.

First, we go deep on the powerful story out of Dallas, Texas. You may have seen the headlines: a 'Gayborhood' church, Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, is challenging Governor Greg Abbott. After Abbott's directive to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to remove LGBTQ+ rainbow crosswalks—calling them "political distractions" and "unsafe"—Oak Lawn UMC responded. This church, located in the heart of Dallas's Oak Lawn 'Gayborhood', has painted its own front steps in brilliant rainbow colors.

We unpack the full story: the church's pastor and leaders are framing this move "not one of defiance, but of faith," calling the steps a "visible sign of the gospel they preach" of radical inclusivity. This act of protest comes as cities like Dallas and San Antonio, which have privately-funded rainbow crosswalks, must now review the state's directive or risk losing federal and state transportation funding. We discuss the intersection of faith, politics, and protest.
Next, we tackle one of the most difficult questions for faith: Is animal suffering disproof for God? If God is all-good and all-powerful, why did He create a world with so much "gratuitous" suffering in the animal kingdom? For billions of years before humans, animals have suffered predation, disease, and natural disasters. We explore this specific version of the "problem of evil" (theodicy) and examine the different Christian responses. These include "The Fall" of creation, the "Greater Good" argument (that suffering is a necessary part of a balanced ecosystem), and the "Limited View" argument that we cannot understand God's ultimate purpose.
Finally, we ask a fundamental question of Christian ethics: Should Christians be pacifists? This is a core debate within the church. We explore the deep divide: on one side, you have the clear commands of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount to "turn the other cheek" and "love your enemies." On the other side, you have passages like Romans 13 that grant the state the "power of the sword," Jesus's command to buy a sword in Luke 22, and the long-standing "Just War Theory." We debate the biblical arguments for and against Christian pacifism.
