St. John Climacus: The Ladder of Divine Ascent (Step 8 & Step 24 especially)
• Written for monks but deeply applicable to anyone struggling with anger.
• In Step 8, he teaches on freedom from anger, calling it a “wound of the soul.”
• Quote: “The beginning of freedom from anger is silence of the lips when the heart is agitated. The middle is silence of the thoughts when there is a mere disturbance of soul. The end is an imperturbable calm under the breath of unclean winds.”
Anger, Illusion, and the Peace of Christ
We live in a time when people walk about wearing invisible masks. Some wear the mask of success, others the mask of rejection, some hide behind pride, others behind shame. And when these masks are threatened when someone challenges the image we’ve constructed the heart burns, the mind races, and anger grips us.
But our Catholic Faith teaches that true peace cannot be found in clinging to these illusions. It comes only in surrendering them at the foot of the Cross, where Christ strips us of every mask and clothes us with His grace.
Segment 1: The Masks We Wear
In the image before us, countless people are shown with faces covered in masks some painted with words like ‘trusted,’ ‘rejected,’ ‘loved,’ or ‘accused.’ This is a striking picture of the modern world.
So many of us define ourselves by labels our career, our failures, our wounds, our reputation. Yet St. Paul exhorts us in Ephesians 4:22-24: ‘Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.’
When I cling to a mask whether of pride, control, or self-importance I react in anger the moment someone threatens it. If I wear the mask of pride, a simple correction can enrage me. If I wear the mask of rejection, even a harmless word can cut like a knife.
St. Augustine said: ‘Pride is the love of self perverted.’ Pride is what fuels anger most often. It is not the slight itself that wounds us it is that our false self, our mask, has been pierced.”
Reflection question for the listener: What mask am I clinging to today that makes me quick to anger? And am I willing to set it aside, so that Christ may clothe me in His peace?
Segment 2: Illusion and the Devil’s Deception
“The masks we wear are illusions. And illusion is the Devil’s favorite tool.
Christ calls Satan ‘the father of lies’ (John 8:44). He whispers to us: ‘You must protect your pride. You must demand respect. You must never forgive.’ But when we listen, anger rises and our reason grows dim.
St. Thomas Aquinas explained that anger itself is not always sinful. There is such a thing as righteous anger when it flows from charity when we burn against injustice or sin. But Aquinas also warned: when anger is disordered, when it flows from wounded pride, it blinds our reason and leads us to sin.
The Devil knows this well. He uses anger to divide families, to fracture parishes, to turn friends into enemies. St. John Chrysostom once said: ‘The devil fears hearts united in peace, for peace is the dwelling of God.’
So when we allow anger to dominate us, we are cooperating with the enemy of our souls. The illusion is that anger gives us power. The reality is that anger enslaves us.
The saints remind us that the surest way to defeat Satan is humility and peace. As St. Padre Pio said: ‘Have courage and do not fear the assaults of the Devil. Remember this: it is a good sign if the Devil shouts and roars around your conscience, since this shows he is not inside your will.’
But when we harbor anger when we cling to grudges the Devil finds a foothold. The illusion becomes reality, and peace slips away.
Segment 3: Christ’s Answer to Anger
Our Lord shows us the path. He says in Matthew 11:29: ‘Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’
True meekness is not weakness. It is strength guided by reason and grace. It is power under control.
On the Cross, Christ endured mockery, scourging, and crucifixion. And yet, He did not lash out. He prayed instead: ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ (Luke 23:34). This is the supreme example of holy meekness.
The saints imitated Him:
• St. Francis de Sales was by nature quick-tempered. But through prayer and penance, he became known as the ‘Gentle Bishop.’ He said: ‘The greatest method of praying is to pray the Rosary.’ This devotion kept his heart anchored in peace.
• St. Philip Neri used joy and humor to disarm conflict. When provoked, he often responded with wit instead of wrath, reminding us that a cheerful heart can dissolve anger more effectively than argument.
This does not mean we never confront evil. Christ overturned the tables of the money changers, but His zeal was ordered to justice, not to pride.
Reflection: When I feel anger rising, do I imitate Christ’s meekness, or do I cling to the illusion of control? Am I willing to surrender my anger to Him and let Him transform it into zeal for souls?
Segment 4: The Sacraments as Healing for Anger
Anger, like any wound, requires healing. And the Divine Physician gives us the sacraments for this very purpose.
• Confession: Here we pour out the poison of bitterness. We name the anger, the resentment, the grudges and Christ absolves us, freeing us from chains the Devil delights in.
• The Holy Eucharist: When we receive the Prince of Peace, He calms our passions. St. Thomas Aquinas taught that the Eucharist strengthens charity and extinguishes the heat of anger.
• Prayer and fasting: These are ancient remedies. Fasting disciplines the flesh; prayer unites the heart with God. Together they weaken the grip of anger.
A practical step: Before reacting in anger, pause for even a moment and pray silently: ‘Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine.’ This short prayer has calmed many storms before they became sins.”
Segment 5: Living Peacefully in a World of Masks
We live in a world where masks and illusions are the norm. We cannot force others to remove their masks. But we can refuse to wear them ourselves.
St. Paul instructs us in Romans 12:18: ‘If it be possible, as much as lies in you, have peace with all men.’
This doesn’t mean ignoring injustice. It means confronting evil with clarity and charity, not hatred.
The modern world, following voices like Alan Watts, often teaches that peace comes by detachment by stepping away from reality. But the Catholic faith teaches otherwise: peace comes not from detachment but from anchoring ourselves in Christ, who is Truth itself.
When we are rooted in Christ, no insult can rob us of peace, no false label can define us, no mask is needed. We live as children of God, clothed in His grace.
Segment 6: A Catholic Remedy for Anger
Let us close with five remedies, tried and true from the saints:
1. Examine your conscience daily identify when anger rises and why.
2. Confess anger promptly when it crosses into sin. Don’t let resentment linger.
3. Meditate on Christ’s Passion especially His silence before Pilate. Silence is stronger than rage.
4. Practice acts of mercy charity dissolves anger at its root.
5. Invoke Our Lady she is the Queen of Peace. At the Cross, she endured the greatest sorrow without hatred, only love.
St. Teresa of Avila said: “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things are passing; God never changes.’ Anger fades, but God’s peace endures forever.”
Epistle: Tobias 12:7–15
"For it is good to hide the secret of a king: but honorable to reveal and confess the works of God. Prayer is good with fasting and alms more than to lay up treasures of gold... When thou didst pray with tears, and didst bury the dead... I offered thy prayer to the Lord. For I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the Lord."
Reflection on the Epistle
Raphael reveals to Tobias and his family that he has been their companion all along guiding, protecting, and carrying their prayers before God. This passage highlights three great truths of the spiritual life:
1. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are powerful before God.
2. God sends His angels to aid us, often unseen.
3. Healing is both physical and spiritual Tobit’s blindness is healed, but more importantly, his family is led into deeper faith and gratitude.
For us, the lesson is clear: God has not abandoned His children. He sends His angels to guard us in trials and to carry our prayers before His throne. Raphael reminds us to combine prayer with works of charity and sacrifice, so that our faith may bear fruit in action.
Gospel – John 5:1–4
"Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica... In these lay a great multitude of sick, blind, lame, withered: waiting for the moving of the water. And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under."
Reflection on the Gospel
The pool of Bethesda symbolizes the human condition suffering, weakness, and the longing for healing. God, in His mercy, sent an angel to stir the waters as a sign of His healing power.
This passage finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ, the Divine Physician, who heals not only the body but the soul. Yet, the angel’s role here reminds us that God often works through His messengers bringing healing, comfort, and direction to the faithful.
St. Raphael’s mission mirrors this Gospel. He is the angel of healing, stirring the waters of our souls through grace, helping us rise from sin and weakness, and leading us toward wholeness in Christ.
Feast of St. Raphael the Archangel
St. Raphael’s mission is threefold:
• Healing: as with Tobit’s blindness.
• Guidance: as he accompanied Tobias on his journey.
• Protection: as he drove away the demon afflicting Sarah.
In a world marked by illness, confusion, and demonic attack, Raphael’s intercession is especially timely. He teaches us to trust in God’s providence, to seek healing in the sacraments, and to walk with confidence on the path of salvation.
Application for Today
• Pray with fasting and almsgiving: Strengthen your prayers by sacrifice and charity.
• Seek healing in the sacraments: Confession and the Eucharist bring deeper healing than any earthly remedy.
• Call upon Raphael’s intercession: Ask his guidance in journeys, his protection in spiritual warfare, and his healing in illness.
• Be grateful for unseen help: Like Tobias, recognize that God’s providence often works through hidden instruments.
Conclusionary Prayer
O God, who gave blessed Raphael the Archangel unto Thy servant Tobias as a companion in his journey, grant to us, Thy servants, that we may always be protected by his care and strengthened by his help.
St. Raphael the Archangel, pray for us.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, intercede for us.
