Rabia Basri Episode No 3 |The Saint of Divine Love
Assalamualaikum dear brothers, sisters, and seekers of truth.
Welcome to our new spiritual journey, “Rabia al-Adawiyya: The Saint of Divine Love.” Starting today, and every day to come, we will share one beautiful instalment of her life, wisdom, and devotion of the great mystic Hazrat Rabia Basri (713–801 CE) — a woman whose heart burned only with love for Allah.
Through her prayers, tears, and words of divine longing, Rabia taught the world that true worship is not born from fear or desire, but from pure love for the Creator alone. Each episode will bring you closer to her luminous path of faith, patience, and remembrance.
In this blessed series, we describing the radiant life and timeless wisdom of Hazrat Rabia al-Adawiyya (Rabia Basri) (713–801 CE), one of the greatest mystics and saints in Islamic history. Known as the Mother of Divine Love, her life was a shining example of pure devotion, deep humility, and unconditional love for Allah Almighty. Through each episode, we will journey into her extraordinary world — where faith, patience, and sincerity illuminated the darkness of worldly desires, and where every breath was an act of remembrance.
Born in the city of Basra, in present-day Iraq, Rabia’s early life was marked by hardship and poverty. Yet, her heart was rich with divine love from an early age. Sold into slavery and later freed for her piety, she chose a life of solitude, prayer, and spiritual reflection. Her story teaches us that true wealth lies not in possessions but in the closeness of one’s soul to the Creator. Her example reminds us that Allah looks not at our appearance or status, but at the purity of our hearts and the sincerity of our intentions, as mentioned in the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith number 2720.
Hazrat Rabia’s worship was unique — she did not seek Paradise, nor did she fear Hell. Her only goal was to love Allah for His sake alone. She once said, “O Allah, if I worship You for fear of Hell, burn me in Hell. If I worship You for desire of Paradise, deny me Paradise. But if I worship You for Your sake alone, grant me Your eternal Beauty.” This profound expression of pure love became the foundation of Sufi devotion and continues to inspire seekers of truth across the world.
In the Holy Quran, Allah says, “He has succeeded who purifies the soul, and he has failed who corrupts it”(Surah Ash-Shams, 91:9–10). Rabia’s entire life was a reflection of this divine message. She dedicated herself to Tazkiyah al-Nafs, the purification of the soul, through prayer, fasting, and constant remembrance of Allah (Dhikr). She spent her nights in worship and her days in reflection, never seeking fame or followers. Her love for Allah burned so brightly that it drew hearts toward light and truth.
Through this series, we will share her **sayings, prayers, and spiritual insights**, revealing the deep meanings behind her words and actions. We will explore how her message of divine love transformed the spiritual landscape of early Islam and laid the foundation for later Sufi traditions. Each episode will uncover a new aspect of her journey — her miracles, her supplications, her wisdom, and her relationship with other saints and scholars of her time.
Rabia al-Adawiyya’s legacy continues to live in the hearts of believers who seek a deeper connection with their Creator. She showed that true love for Allah means surrendering the self, abandoning pride, and living in complete trust (Tawakkul) and gratitude. Her life reminds us that even in hardship, the believer’s heart can find peace in remembrance of Allah, as the Quran says in Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 28, “Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest” .
In every episode, we will draw lessons from her life that can guide us today — how to love Allah sincerely, how to overcome worldly temptations, and how to purify our hearts from attachment to anything other than Him. Her path teaches us that the ultimate goal of faith is Ihsan, to worship Allah as though we see Him, as mentioned in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith number 50, and Sahih Muslim, Hadith number 9.
Please be with us on this spiritual journey as we describe the luminous heart of Hazrat Rabia al-Adawiyya — a woman who became a beacon of divine love for all of humanity. Her message is eternal: to love Allah without condition, to serve without expectation, and to live only for His pleasure.
May this series inspire you to turn your heart toward the One who created it, and may her story remind us all that true beauty lies in a soul devoted to Allah alone.
