This is Something 70s Time Warp | "Thank God It's Friday" (1978) Screening | Donna Summer's Happy Radio 79
Tonight is a special edition of Friday Night Videos…why?
Friday Night Videos was not on the air in 1979…and that’s where we are goin’…1979
Okay, we’ll briefly stop in May 1978 to watch a very cool, mostly forgotten disco comedy featuring music by & starring Donna Summer & The Commodores. Not only did this film feature one of the 70s most prominent musicians but it launched the careers of or was an early role for the likes of…
Jeff Goldblum
Debra Winger
&
Teri Nunn (formed Berlin of Take My Breath Away fame)
…to name a few…
It is an unapologetic ode to Disco & in the spirit of the film my mix will feature a heavy amount of Donna Summer & a good combo of Disco & Funk…all from 1979…yes, an entire 90+ minute mix featuring nothing but the top hits of 1970 and/or albums released in 1979 even if they hadn’t charted yet…as long as it’s 79’…it’s in the mix
But that’s not all ladies and gentleman because I also have movie trailers, cartoons & lots of tv commercials from 1979…it’s the closest I’ve stayed within the window a specific year on any of my time capsules. I gave 1979 special attention. Meaning, aside from TGIF, the film, this entire night is top-down 1979…
I thought it would be good to understand what was popular just before the 80s began. There is truly a serious transition in the way music sounds…we were seeing the ‘Last Days of Disco’ as they say…but I would argue that if ‘any’ Disco was ‘any’ good…it probably was peaking in 1979 because they really had some of it down to an art…just as everyone was getting sick of it & deciding that living in disco clubs may not be the best long-term plan (see Studio 54 documentaries for more on this topic)
Anyways…those of you who really like the commercials & cartoons will really enjoy what I have tonight. I really did pick cartoons that were actually airing in 1979…sometimes pulling from memory but I made sure to actually ‘research’ 1979 to ensure my mix has full 1979 integrity…it passes muster…look up every track. Most charted in 1979 or were released that year…but nothing from the 80s…although some of these songs maintained popularity once MTV got on the air…
What did we have in 1979?
Midnight Special which was hosted for awhile by Wolfman Jack and of course we can’t forget Soul Train which featured Don Cornelius as the host…but there was ‘NO’ MTV and ‘NO’ Friday Night Videos…and ‘NO’ Solid Gold (that wasn’t until 1980)
Hope you enjoy the 70s Time Warp as much as I enjoyed putting it together.
