Should we prepare for ''No Buy, No Sell''

In Revelation 13:16-17, John talks about a time when we will have a choice between taking the mark of the beast or not being able to buy or sell. Why would God warn us if He doesn't want us to prepare? Is it possible to become totally self-sufficient?
