NASA’s Latest Mars Images (2025)
Newly released photos from NASA showcase the incredible surface of Mars — the fourth planet from the Sun and our solar system’s second smallest world. Its trademark red color comes from iron oxide, giving Mars its iconic rusty appearance.
Although Mars is only about half the size of Earth, it shares many familiar traits: a rocky crust, polar ice caps, and a day that’s just 40 minutes longer than ours. Because of its axial tilt, Mars also experiences seasonal changes similar to Earth — though each season lasts roughly twice as long.
The Martian landscape is strikingly diverse, featuring the towering volcano Olympus Mons, the tallest mountain in the Solar System, and the massive canyon network Valles Marineris. Scientists believe Mars once had a much thicker atmosphere and flowing water, and that some of this water may still exist beneath its surface.
Two tiny moons — Phobos and Deimos — orbit close to the planet. These irregularly shaped bodies are likely captured asteroids. In about 50 million years, Phobos is expected to either crash into Mars or break apart into a ring around it.
Today, several spacecraft continue to explore Mars: NASA’s rovers Curiosity and Perseverance traverse the terrain, while orbiters like Mars Odyssey, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and ESA’s Mars Express study the planet from above.
Mars can be seen from Earth without a telescope, shining with its distinct reddish glow. Beneath its surface lies a rich composition of silicon, oxygen, iron, magnesium, and other elements that could one day support human outposts. Its partially liquid core, made mostly of iron, nickel, and sulfur, hints at a once-active planet that shaped the features we see today.
