Rep. Thomas Massie Talks ‘Country of Origin’ Label Legislation for the UNITED STATES

Congress removed country of origin labeling requirements in 2015 for beef and pork - Thomas Massie is trying to bring it back.

In 2015, mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL) for beef and pork in the United States was repealed as part of an omnibus budget bill, following a World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement that ruled the labeling requirements gave U.S. beef and pork an unfair marketing advantage over products from Canada and Mexico. The WTO had sided with these countries, who threatened retaliatory sanctions of over $1 billion annually if the labeling laws were not withdrawn. This repeal effectively ended the requirement for retailers to label beef and pork with the country of origin, allowing products to be labeled as "Product of the USA" even if the cattle were born, raised, and slaughtered abroad, as long as some processing occurred within the United States.
