Our ballad is about the surprising encounter between two legendary men of the Old West, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and the infamous Jack Slade during a brief stop for breakfast at the Horseshoe Creek Station during the late summer of 1861.

Jack Slade’s reputation had already spread far and wide. He was known as a ruthless gunman and feared enforcer, often called a killer and torturer who ruled his stations with an iron hand. Though his legend grew through tales of cruelty and vengeance, the truth was less certain. Only one killing, that of Andrew Ferrin in May 1859 was ever confirmed. Slade, then a stage line superintendent, shot Ferrin after a dispute over freight delays. Ferrin drew first and missed; Slade’s shot proved fatal.

In Twain’s recollection, that breakfast with Slade became an unforgettable brush with danger, a moment where myth and man sat across the same table. And that is where our song begins.
