It consists of 22 bones (excluding ear ossicles).

Divided into:

Cranial bones (8): Protect the brain.

Frontal, Parietal (2), Temporal (2), Occipital, Sphenoid, Ethmoid.

Facial bones (14): Form the face.

Maxilla (2), Zygomatic (2), Nasal (2), Lacrimal (2), Palatine (2), Inferior nasal concha (2), Vomer, Mandible.

Joints: All are immovable sutures, except the mandible, which has a movable temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Functions:

a. Protects the brain.

b. Supports facial structures.

c. Provides attachment for muscles.
