Roswell, NM - Gunshot after gunshot echoed through a Roswell neighborhood in August, leaving two officers injured. And now, we’re getting a first look at what happened in that shootout between police and the suspect.
It started with a call from a woman who said 29-year-old Dakota Perkins was suicidal and armed. Police responded and were immediately met with a barrage of automatic gunfire.
New Mexico State Police officer: “Boss, I need you to come out for me. Drop the firearm if you have it.”
On August 28, in the middle of a Roswell neighborhood, police ordered Dakota Perkins to surrender after a 911 call came from his home saying Perkins was threatening his own life.
“Hey, come out to the front door with your hands up and drop whatever you have. I can’t talk about you with it like thi–“. Video showed an officer being cut off by the sound of gunshots.
But those commands were ignored, with police saying Perkins continued to open fire, armed with an automatic weapon.
The audio from police body cam footage shows the moment an officer is hit.
NMSP Officer 1: “You good?”
NMSP Officer 2: “We’re good officers 10-4”
Radio: “We got a hit!”
NMSP Officer 1: “Who’s hit? Who’s hit? Come out with your hands up. We’re not doing this anymore.”
New Mexico State Police later learned a Roswell Police Officer and a Chaves County Sheriff’s Deputy were wounded.
A woman who was inside the home with two kids eventually warned police that Perkins had access to roughly 30 guns, a bulletproof vest, a gas mask, and explosive material.
“Move back, go, go, go, go,” one officer said.
Officers kept negotiating with Perkins using a PA system. “Dakota, this is the Roswell police department man, come out with your hands up, do it now, end this peacefully, man.”
But Perkins continued to open fire, while officers from three different departments all fired back. Perkins surrendered after being shot in the arm, about an hour and a half into the standoff.
Investigators said that happened after he pulled the pin on a flash grenade and threw it outside to keep it from lighting explosives in the house.
The Roswell Police Department officer and Chaves County Sheriff’s Office deputy who were wounded in the gunfight were treated for serious but non-fatal injuries.
Perkins is now behind bars awaiting trial on a handful of charges, including attempted murder.
