On October 16, 2025, United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 bound for Los Angeles made an unexpected diversion to Salt Lake City after a sudden windshield crack at 36,000 feet. The flight, carrying 140 passengers, experienced what crew described as a “sharp flash and impact” moments before the damage appeared.

The pilot sustained minor cuts and bruising, reportedly from flying glass fragments and the windshield bore unusual scorch marks unlike standard thermal stress fractures often seen in high-altitude aviation.

Authorities have yet to issue an official cause.

Former Navy pilot Ryan Graves, who testified before Congress about unidentified aerial phenomena is now Executive Director of Americans for Safe Aerospace. Graves has been advocating for the Safe Airspace for Americans Act, a bipartisan bill that would give commercial and military pilots secure, stigma-free channels to report UAP encounters or unexplained aviation hazards.

He’s warned that unidentified objects, whether advanced tech, debris, or something else, pose real safety risks to both civilian and military flights.
