As the government shutdown drags into its third full week, making it one of the longest in U.S. history since October 1, 2025, millions of Americans face losing their food assistance. The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is already running low on contingency funds, and without a budget deal, benefits could be slashed as early as November.

At the same time, President Donald Trump has announced plans to import beef from Argentina in an effort to lower prices for consumers. But U.S. cattle ranchers are calling the move a betrayal. They say the policy sidelines American producers, undercuts domestic supply, and leaves farming communities vulnerable to foreign competition.

While the shutdown threatens access to food aid for the poor and working class, the foreign-beef policy threatens the livelihoods of ranchers. Both show how dependent Americans have become on government decisions and how the government is picking winners and losers in the national food system.

Let's talk about power, food access, national sovereignty, and government control.
