SEOUL, Oct 22 – North Korea fired what appeared to be multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday, South Korea’s military said, a week before a key Asia-Pacific leaders’ meeting in South Korea.

It was the first launch of ballistic missiles since May by Pyongyang, which has defied a United Nations Security Council ban on the weapons. It was also the first such launch since Lee Jae Myung was elected president in South Korea, with a platform of engagement with North Korea.

Lee and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to meet in South Korea next week at a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Trump is also expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

South Korea detected several projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles fired from an area near North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, in a northeasterly direction early on Wednesday, its Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

ICE conducts raid on Chinatown’s Canal Street, multiple people detained as New Yorkers rage

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided Chinatown’s Canal Street on Tuesday afternoon, detaining several street vendors in an operation that drew immediate and fierce backlash from bystanders and immigrant advocates.

The operation began at about 3 p.m. in the area of Centre and Canal Streets where ICE agents showed up to question street vendors as part of an alleged operation to tackle counterfeit goods, according to a Homeland Security official.

Videos taken by amNewYork show a crowd of New Yorkers surrounding the federal agents as they carried out the enforcement action in Lower Manhattan. Within moments, ICE agents moved in to arrest some of the bystanders as well, prompting further fury from the gathering crowd.

Many of Israel’s Western allies are quickly abandoning the Jewish state in protest over the all-out war and worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, according to a new report.

Before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu greenlit a plan to block all aid from entering Gaza in March, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar told the premier that such a move would trigger international backlash, drive away Israel’s allies and force a U-turn on the blockade, ultimately accomplishing nothing, Axios reported.

“This is exactly what happened,” a senior Israeli official told the outlet over the latest developments in Gaza.

Maduro Militarizes Venezuela’s Border with Colombia as US Threat Looms

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered the militarization of border crossings with Colombia amid growing threats of a land invasion by the United States. The operations are part of Plan Independencia 200, through which Caracas is preparing for a possible military aggression from Washington.

With this decision, Maduro is implementing a defense plan in the states of Tachira, Apure, and Amazonas — all bordering Colombia — following President Trump’s decision to authorize CIA covert operations in the Caribbean nation, more than two months after the U.S. naval deployment in southern Caribbean waters near Venezuela.
