There are two distinct and differing creation stories in Genesis. In the first, God creates the entire universe in six days and rests on the seventh. Mankind are created, both male and female, on the sixth day. In the second, God creates Adam alone and some time passes before Eve is created from Adam's rib.
The first century Jewish theologian, Philo explains that the first narrative is detailing the making of the Divine Forms in the heavenly realms and the second addresses the making of the physical creation. Philo writes that the material universe is: "an imitation visible to the outward senses of an archetypal model appreciable only to the intuition."
