Miami Township, OH - 22-year-old Jayden Stephenson was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot by police.

Officers were dispatched to Sawgrass Drive on Wednesday, February 19. Stephenson's mother called the police on him, saying he had a knife and was acting aggressively towards his family members. She told the dispatcher he had been to a mental health clinic in the past, but was not currently taking any medication.

In the 911 call, she can be heard telling the dispatcher “I need you to come here, my son's pulled a knife on us. He’s got a mental illness. There is something going on with him.”

For several minutes, Jayden remained calm. As several family members tried to get him to drop the knife, his mother told the dispatcher he was getting aggressive once more.

“Now he’s coming at us. I just don’t want him to get hurt," said his mother. “Do you think he’ll cooperate with us?” asked the dispatcher. “I don’t know he’s out of his mind," she replied.

Officers arrived on scene and over the course of seven minutes ordered him to drop the knife about 29 times. He can be heard refusing to drop the weapon in body camera footage.

Stephenson then rose out of his chair where police fired non-lethal bean bags and attempted to tase him, but he managed to run up the stairs and close himself into a bedroom. Officers followed him, breaking down the door, where they found him lying on the bathroom floor. Demanding he drop the knife, police again fired non-lethal bean bags and tased him.

After Stephenson got up off the floor, officers opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving measures.
