No Kings, No Food, No Plan
While the streets of the Twin Cities are packed with protesters chanting “No Kings” and waving signs against the Trump administration, something real — something deeper — is unfolding quietly in Minnesota’s neighborhoods. See, while everybody’s out there marching about politics and symbolism, the truth is this: families right here in Minnesota are about to go hungry.
We’re three weeks deep into this government shutdown, and the political class — Democrats and Republicans alike — are still pointing fingers instead of giving answers. You got folks on TV debating Trump rallies and royal metaphors, but not a single one talking about how Minnesotans are supposed to eat next month. That’s not leadership. That’s negligence.
Let’s talk facts.
The USDA has already told Minnesota’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families that SNAP — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — will run out of funding in November if this shutdown continues. That’s food stamps. That’s WIC. That’s how working-class families, single mothers, and elders keep food on the table.
As of October 15, Minnesota officially stopped approving new applications for food assistance. So even if you apply today, it’ll just sit there in limbo until Washington decides to stop playing games. Come October 21, DCYF will start notifying current SNAP recipients that there might be no benefits in November. None.
So, while people are out chanting “No Kings,” maybe the bigger question is — no food? Because that’s what this shutdown is really doing to our communities.
And it doesn’t stop there.
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers — that’s the backbone for affordable housing in this state. HUD says they can only cover payments through mid-November. After that? It’s uncertain. Landlords might not get paid, which means tenants — families, seniors, veterans — could be facing evictions. And let’s keep it real: a lot of landlords already don’t want to deal with Section 8. If payments get delayed, they’ll start backing out of contracts altogether.
Meanwhile, all administrative work tied to Section 8 — new applications, inspections, renewals — it’s all on pause. So anyone in the middle of trying to secure housing or keep their voucher up-to-date? They’re stuck.
Now, the part that really gets me — where are Minnesota’s elected officials? Where’s the leadership? Where’s the press conference laying out a plan to take care of our people while D.C. plays tug-of-war with our livelihoods? I don’t see Governor Walz out here addressing how long Minnesota can stretch emergency food reserves. I don’t see Senator Klobuchar or Rep. Ilhan Omar breaking down a real strategy for Section 8 stability. And don’t think Republicans are off the hook either — they’re too busy using this shutdown as a talking point for next year’s campaign ads.
This right here is what “disenfranchisement” really looks like.
It’s not just about being denied the right to vote — it’s about being ignored after you vote. It’s when you pay taxes, you follow the law, you raise your kids right, and when the government fails, nobody in power even bothers to check if you’re okay.
Black, brown, white, immigrant, rural — don’t matter. When the system stops working, it stops for all working people. And that’s the reality too many of our communities are facing while mainstream media keeps us distracted with protest headlines.
We keep hearing “No Kings.” But let’s be honest — the folks in Washington and St. Paul acting like royalty themselves. They’re insulated from the struggle. Their paychecks still coming in, their benefits still active, their families still eating. Meanwhile, the people they represent — the ones who can’t afford to miss a single EBT refill or Section 8 payment — are the ones paying the price for their political theater.
This isn’t a partisan issue. It’s a people issue.
We can’t let our communities fall through the cracks while politicians grandstand. This is the time for local churches, nonprofits, and even small businesses to step up and coordinate emergency food and housing support. Because if we wait for the government to fix this, we might be waiting too long.
Minnesota prides itself on being “Minnesota Nice,” but right now, we need to be Minnesota real. The people are tired of empty promises and performative politics. The disenfranchised voter is wide awake — watching, remembering, and ready to hold everybody accountable come election time.
Because while the protests rage and the shutdown drags on, one truth remains:
We don’t need Kings — we need accountability. We don’t need politicians — we need problem solvers.
Until they start acting like it, the people are on their own.
