On What Day Was the Soul Entered into Adam’s (RA) Body?
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, dear viewers.
Welcome to another enlightening episode of your daily Islamic series, “Noor-e-Hidayat: Islami Sawalat aur Jawabat.”
This is the program where we seek knowledge and clarity about Islam through authentic Quranic verses and Hadith.
Today’s important question is: On What Day Was the Soul Entered into Adam’s (RA) Body?
The story of Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, is the beginning of human existence and a reminder of Allah’s power, wisdom, and mercy. Among the most fascinating details of his creation is the moment when Allah breathed the soul into his body, transforming him from lifeless clay into a living human being. The Holy Quran and authentic Hadith narrations describe this great event and indicate the day when this divine act occurred.
Allah the Almighty created Adam from dust and clay, shaping his body with His own command. The Quran mentions this in Surah Sad, verse 71 and 72, “When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay. So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down to him in prostration.’” This verse reveals that Adam’s body was formed first, and then Allah breathed the soul into him, which marked the beginning of human life.
Islamic scholars and narrations from the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, mention that the soul was breathed into Prophet Adam on a Friday, a day that holds great spiritual significance in Islam. This event was not coincidental but divinely chosen, for Friday is the best day of the week in the sight of Allah.
It is narrated in Sahih Muslim, Hadith number 854, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it, and the Hour will not be established except on a Friday.” This authentic Hadith clearly shows that Adam’s creation and the moment his soul was breathed into him both occurred on a Friday.
According to Islamic sources, the process of Adam’s creation took place over a long time. Allah first gathered dust from different parts of the earth, mixed it with water to make clay, and shaped it into the form of a man. This clay form remained for years until Allah decided to breathe into it the soul that made Adam a living being. The very instant the soul entered his body, life spread from his head downwards. When it reached his eyes, he looked around in wonder, and when it reached his stomach, he felt the need for food. This is mentioned in a narration from Sahih Muslim, Hadith number 2955, where it is described that as soon as the soul entered Adam, he sneezed and said “Alhamdulillah,” and Allah replied, “May your Lord have mercy on you, O Adam.”
This moment was not only the beginning of Adam’s life but also the beginning of the human journey on earth. The choice of Friday for this great event shows the special honor given to this day. Friday is not an ordinary day; it is a day of gathering, remembrance, and mercy. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said in Jami’ al-Tirmidhi, Hadith number 488, “Friday is the master of days, and the greatest in the sight of Allah. On it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the Trumpet will be blown, and on it the creation will swoon.”
The connection between Adam’s soul and the day of Friday symbolizes a divine pattern. It was on a Friday that humanity began, and it will be on a Friday that the Day of Judgment will begin. This shows that the entire journey of mankind, from creation to resurrection, revolves around Allah’s divine wisdom.
Imam Ibn Kathir, in his famous work "Tafsir al-Quran al-Azim", explains that the soul was breathed into Adam in the final hours of Friday, most likely between Asr and Maghrib. This is considered a blessed time in which prayers are accepted, as mentioned in another Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith number 935, that there is a moment on Friday in which if a believer asks Allah for something good, He will surely grant it. The same blessed time was chosen for the first human soul to be given life.
The Quran also highlights the significance of life and the soul. In Surah Al-Hijr, verse 29, Allah says, “So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down to him in prostration.” This verse again confirms that the soul was directly given by Allah, making Adam a unique creation unlike any other being. The soul represents divine honor, knowledge, and responsibility that set humanity apart from all other creatures.
Thus, the soul of Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, was breathed into him on Friday, the day chosen by Allah as a day of blessings, mercy, and greatness. It is the day that connects the beginning of creation to the end of time. This sacred event serves as a reminder that every Friday carries a spiritual echo of that moment when the first man came to life by the command of Allah.
In conclusion, the day on which the soul was breathed into Adam was Friday — the day of divine favor and remembrance. It marks not only the beginning of human existence but also the continuous mercy of Allah upon mankind. Every Friday, when Muslims gather for prayer and recitation, they relive the blessings of that first moment of life given to Adam. As Allah says in Surah Al-Jumu’ah, verse 9, “O you who have believed, when the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade.” The day that gave life to humanity continues to be the day that revives the hearts of believers through the remembrance of their Creator.
We pray that Allah Almighty grants us the ability to act upon what we have learned today.
O Allah, increase us in knowledge, faith, and understanding.
O Allah, fill our hearts with Your light and make our deeds a means of Your pleasure. Ameen.
See you tomorrow, Insha’Allah, with another inspiring question and answer in “Noor-e-Hidayat.”
Until then, keep remembering Allah, for indeed, “In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.”
Allah Hafiz
