How Many Years Did It Take for the Body of Prophet Adam (RA) to Be Formed?
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, dear viewers.
Welcome to another enlightening episode of your daily Islamic series, “Noor-e-Hidayat: Islami Sawalat aur Jawabat.”
This is the program where we seek knowledge and clarity about Islam through authentic Quranic verses and Hadith.
Today’s important question is: How Many Years Did It Take for the Body of Prophet Adam (RA) to Be Formed?
The creation of Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, is one of the most remarkable events in the history of existence. Allah the Almighty honored him as the first human being and the father of all mankind. The Holy Quran and authentic Hadith literature provide deep insight into how Adam was created, the stages of his formation, and the divine wisdom behind this process.
According to Islamic teachings, the body of Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, was not created instantly but was formed gradually by the command of Allah. The process of his creation symbolizes the greatness and perfection of the Creator, who designed every aspect of human life with precision and purpose. Allah mentions in the Holy Quran in Surah Al-Imran verse 59, “Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was.” This verse shows that Adam was created directly by Allah without the involvement of any parents.
The scholars of Islam have discussed in detail how the formation of Prophet Adam’s body took place. According to narrations, Allah first gathered dust from different parts of the earth — red, white, black, and brown — and mixed it with water to form clay. This clay was shaped into the form of a man. It is narrated in Tafsir Ibn Kathir that this clay remained in a hollow, dry form for a long time before Allah breathed the soul into it. The time between the molding of Adam’s body and the breathing of the soul is mentioned in some Islamic traditions to be around forty years, while other narrations extend it up to one hundred or even more years.
Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, is reported to have said that Allah created Adam from clay and left him as a lifeless figure for a long duration, during which the angels would pass by and say, “If Allah wills, something great will come from you.” This narration reflects that the creation of Adam’s body was a gradual divine process that took many years, not a sudden event.
A well-known Hadith reported in Sahih Muslim (Hadith number 2841) mentions that Allah created Adam from a handful of soil taken from all parts of the earth, and that is why the children of Adam have different colors, characters, and natures. This Hadith beautifully explains the diversity among human beings and how it traces back to the creation of the first man.
In another narration mentioned by Imam Ibn Jarir al-Tabari in his commentary, it is stated that Adam’s body remained as clay for a long period, possibly around forty years, before life was breathed into him. This indicates that the process of creation was not instantaneous. The formation of Adam’s body, the shaping of his form, and the preparation of his structure were all done with divine wisdom over a period that only Allah fully knows.
The Quran also describes in several verses the stages of Adam’s creation. In Surah Sad verse 71 and 72, Allah says, “When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay. So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down to him in prostration.’” These verses explain the two important stages — first the shaping from clay, and second the breathing of the soul — which completed the creation of Adam.
The duration mentioned in various Islamic traditions about the time it took for the body of Adam to be fully formed ranges between forty and one hundred years. This long formation time represents the perfection of Allah’s creative power and the honor bestowed upon humanity. It also reminds us that the creation of mankind was not an act of coincidence or accident but a planned process designed by the Almighty for a purpose.
Imam al-Qurtubi mentions in his Tafsir that the slow creation of Adam’s body demonstrates Allah’s deliberate will and majesty. Just as Allah creates in stages in the womb, He created the first man in stages too. The clay form of Adam stood hollow for years before life entered it. When the soul finally entered, Adam sneezed and said, “Alhamdulillah,” and Allah replied, “May your Lord have mercy on you.” This Hadith is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith number 4296.
Therefore, the most accepted understanding among scholars is that it took several years — between forty and one hundred — for the body of Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, to be fully formed before Allah breathed life into him. The exact number of years is known only to Allah, but the long duration itself teaches humanity about the importance of patience, purpose, and the greatness of divine creation.
In conclusion, the formation of Prophet Adam’s body over many years is a powerful sign of Allah’s wisdom. It reminds mankind of their humble origin from dust and clay, as mentioned in Surah Al-Hajj verse 5: “O mankind, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] We created you from dust.” This gradual creation shows that every stage of human existence, from Adam to his descendants, is under the command and mercy of Allah. The story of Adam’s creation is not merely a historical account; it is a reminder that every soul was brought into being with purpose, care, and divine love.
We pray that Allah Almighty grants us the ability to act upon what we have learned today.
O Allah, increase us in knowledge, faith, and understanding.
O Allah, fill our hearts with Your light and make our deeds a means of Your pleasure. Ameen.
See you tomorrow, Insha’Allah, with another inspiring question and answer in “Noor-e-Hidayat.”
Until then, keep remembering Allah, for indeed, “In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.”
