Songs About California is a concept album from Los Angeles rocker Bobby Bonzig. The nine songs are drenched in guitar distortion and aggressive riffs but maintain a humorous, tongue in cheek attitude. Songs About California is a juxtaposition about the optimistic hope of life in the Golden state and the corrupt, brutal reality of actually being there. Musically the songs vary widely from molasses slow sludge riffs (Altamont, Donner Party) to blazing fast punk songs (Boardwalk Crusties, Dust Bowl) that sometimes ascend into thrash territory (Human Potential Institute) or touch on Dance punk (End Of The Line). The album features ripping guitar solos on every song that nod to Bonzig's Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies influences. There are several songs with mellow acoustic guitars and appearances from B3 and DX7 synths add color to the sonic palette. Bonzig has many things to say about his home state and they are not all rosy (Boardwalk Crusties, Human Potential Institute, L.A. on D.E.I.) but he also has glowing memorials (Junipero Serra The Father, Glamis Death Rally). Bonzigs razor sharp wit and withering criticism of California policy, mismanagement and history suggest he is the spiritual successor to Dead Kennedys. Fans of Infectious Grooves, Cave In, Queens Of The Stone Age, DFA1979 and Black Sabbath will appreciate Songs About California, after all California knows how to party.
