AI Says You Owe $440: Why Computers Make Us Robotic Too

A New York woman is disputing a $440 charge from Hertz after an AI-powered inspection flagged what the company calls a “small scuff” on a wheel, damage she insists did not happen during her rental. The AI system from UVeye is now under fire for misidentifying shadows, reflections, or preexisting wear as new damages.

This is more than a rental car dispute. It’s a snapshot of how automated systems are pushing us into rigid thinking: black and white, no second chances, no room for nuance. When computers decide fault, they default to extremes. They can’t understand context, history, or human error. And because we’re bound by their “decisions,” our capacity to argue, negotiate, or even question is being diminished.

Computers were supposed to make things more efficient and fair. But when they replace compassion, nuance, and understanding, they become rigid dictators in circuits. Let’s dig in and reclaim flexibility, even in the age of automation.
