After their secret is discovered by Susan's schoolteachers, Ian Chesterton (William Russell) and Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill), the Doctor inadvertently brings them along, leading to adventures in historical periods like the Stone Age and French Revolution, as well as futuristic settings, famously including the alien planet Skaro and the introduction of the iconic Daleks. The season was also intended to be partly educational, with a format of alternating historical and futuristic stories.
