Fresno, Calif. — The Fresno Police Department released body-worn camera and SWAT footage, capturing an officer-involved shooting that occurred on August 23, 2025, at an apartment near Blythe Avenue and Austin Way.

Officers were responding to a domestic violence call involving 35-year-old Joseph Merical, who had barricaded himself inside the residence and armed himself with two kitchen knives. Merical charged down the stairs toward officers, who first used less-lethal rounds before resorting to deadly force. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, and two knives were recovered at the scene.

The Fresno Police Department said the case will be reviewed by the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, the Office of Independent Review, and Internal Affairs.
