Trump: “Obama Started It — He Spied on My Campaign and Knew It Was Illegal”

D.C. (Dist. of Criminals), October 19, 2025 — In an explosive new segment with Maria Bartiromo, President Donald Trump accused Barack Obama and Joe Biden of directly authorizing the illegal surveillance that targeted his 2016 campaign, claiming the scheme “went right up to the top.”

Discussing reports that Congress collected 30 million lines of phone data during the original January 6th investigation — including communications from eight sitting lawmakers — Trump said the spying operation began long before that.

“I think it went right up to the top,” Trump told Bartiromo. “It started with Obama, with Comey coming up and giving me a briefing in 2015 and 2016. I asked him who knew about it. He said, ‘President Obama, his wife, and Joe Biden.’ They sat in the Oval Office talking about it.”

The president also named Special Counsel Jack Smith as “a deranged lunatic” whose prosecutions have repeatedly “gone too far.” Trump said Smith’s team believed he had evidence damaging to Obama and Biden — evidence he says he never possessed.

“They thought I had bad things on them because they knew how bad they were,” Trump explained. “If they weren’t bad, they wouldn’t have thought that.”

Trump reaffirmed that as president, he had full authority under the Presidential Records Act to retain documents, emphasizing that “only the president has that right.”

Asked if he expects new charges tied to an anti-Trump conspiracy, the president said he’s letting Attorney General Pam Bondi and Kash Patel lead the investigations. “I think Pam is doing a very good job. I think Kash is really coming into his own,” he said.

Trump also reacted to reports of John Bolton’s indictment, calling his former adviser “a bad guy” but admitting his presence once helped in negotiations with world leaders. “They thought it meant war — so they gave me everything,” Trump joked.

Closing the interview, Trump rejected Obama’s recent claim that “democracy is being threatened,” turning the accusation back on the former president.

“He’s the one that threatened it by spying on my campaign,” Trump said. “Obama started it. He knew it was illegal — but he did it anyway.”
