The Rant -Subliminal Instrument?
Digital interactions are influenced by algorithms and logarithms, which not only reflect our preferences but also actively shape them. These algorithms are designed to maximize engagement by learning what captures our attention and elicits a reaction. They identify patterns and predict what will keep us scrolling, clicking, and invested. The highlighting of likes and dislikes is not neutral, as it creates a virtual feedback loop where the more likes a post receives, the more visible it becomes, leading to further engagement. Conversely, posts that garner dislikes or remain ignored are scrubbed from our feeds, creating a chilling effect. Users self-censor, tailoring their content to fit the perceived mold of what will be rewarded. This logarithmic bias towards positive reinforcement subtly encourages conformity and discourages dissent. The logarithmic shaping operates on both an individual and societal level, leading to an echo chamber effect, solidifying biases, and reducing critical thinking. Societally, collective preferences amplified by these algorithms can become powerful cultural forces, leading to a homogenization of thought and the definition of what is "liked" becoming a proxy for what is considered "right" or "true."
