Ghosts of Devils Backbone

A stretch of road in the Texas Hill Country hides a dark past — and the restless spirits who still call it home.

There’s a place in the heart of Texas where the wind carries whispers from the past. The 20-mile stretch of rugged limestone ridge known as the Devil’s Backbone has seen centuries of bloodshed, tragedy, and mystery. From the spirits of Civil War soldiers to the ghostly figure of a Spanish monk, locals say the ridge is alive with echoes of the dead.

In this episode of Ghostly Legends, we explore the legends and hauntings of Backbone Ridge — a landscape so steeped in history that some believe the land itself remembers.

There’s the tale of phantom riders, a monk who appears in the mist, and the chilling story of a man who may have been touched by something ancient in the “Haunted Valley.” We also visit the Devil’s Backbone Tavern, a historic Hill Country bar said to host more than just the living.

Whether these spirits are remnants of violence, tragedy, or imagination, one thing is certain — when night falls on the Backbone, the silence isn’t empty.
