WILLIAM MARSHAL - The World's Greatest Knight

On Traveling Through History, we take a look at one of my ancestors, William Marshal, known by many as the World's Greatest Knight, and one of the most consequential leaders in the formation of England during Medieval times.

William Marshal was an Anglo-Norman knight and statesman who served five English kings and is renowned for his military prowess, tournament achievements and political acumen.  He rose from minor nobility to become the 1st Earl of Pembroke, a champion tournament knight, and a key figure in English history, serving as regent for the young King Henry III.  His impact was significant; he was a pivotal figure in the defeat of a French invasion, the reissuing of Magna Carta, and ensuring the stability of the English throne during a turbulent period.  Marshal served five English kings—Henry II, Richard I, John, and Henry III—in various capacities, from Regent, royal advisor to military commander.  He was particularly trusted by Henry II, and later became a loyal retainer to Richard I, despite their earlier conflicts.  Following the death of King John, Marshal became the regent and protector of the young Henry III, playing a crucial role in stabilizing the kingdom from rumblings of civil war.
