Day 290 – The Cost of Discipleship: Take Up Your Cross — Matthew 16–18 | Bible In A Year (CSB)

In these chapters, Jesus begins to reveal the path to the cross—not just for Himself, but for anyone who would follow Him. Peter boldly confesses Jesus as the Messiah, only to stumble moments later. Jesus then calls His followers to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow. Alongside this, we witness the Transfiguration and Jesus’ teaching on humility, forgiveness, and what greatness in the Kingdom truly looks like.

Questions:
1. When Jesus says, “If anyone wants to follow Me, he must deny himself,” what does that look like in daily life? How do you personally practice self-denial for Christ’s sake?

2. The Transfiguration gives us a glimpse of Jesus’ glory. How might that moment have prepared the disciples for the suffering to come?

3. In Matthew 18, Jesus emphasizes humility and forgiveness as central to life in the Kingdom. How does our culture’s view of power and pride conflict with Jesus’ teaching here?
