Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a shocking act of protest, 24 members of the transgender community in Indore allegedly consumed phenyl collectively on Wednesday night, after the rape of two transgender women by men posing as journalists.

According to police, the group had locked themselves in a room before consuming the toxic liquid, triggering panic in the area. Emergency teams rushed to the scene and took all of them to Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MY Hospital).

Dr. Basant Kumar Ningwal, Superintendent-in-Charge of MY Hospital, said, “All have been admitted and are stable. None of them is in a critical condition.”

The protest followed an FIR against Pankaj and Akshay, who allegedly posed as journalists to blackmail, extort, and sexually assault a transgender woman.

According to the survivor’s statement, the accused demanded money, threatening to tarnish her reputation in the media. When she refused, one of them dragged her to a nearby building and raped her. She said they also threatened to file false cases if she went to the police.

Following her complaint, the Pandharinath Police registered a case of rape and extortion and have launched a search for the accused.

Activists say the mass suicide attempt reflects deep frustration with police apathy and systemic neglect faced by trans people despite legal protections under India’s Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act.
