Dashcam captures trooper using grappler to stop dangerous driver

El Paso County, CO - The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) has confirmed two arrests as a result of a brief, late-night chase in El Paso County that required the use of the Grappler Police Bumper System.

Minutes after 1 a.m. on Oct. 5, Trooper Helland with CSP was in the process of responding to a report of a crash along Highway 24 when he saw a silver Dodge Ram 2500 drive toward the crash scene at what he determined as a high rate of speed. According to the CSP report of the incident, Helland’s speed radar showed the truck driving 87 mph, where the speed limit was marked as 55 mph.

Trooper Helland activated his cruiser’s emergency lights and siren, but the driver, now identified as 22-year-old Davonta Skaggs of Pueblo, did not slow down. Shortly after, Skaggs accelerated further and began weaving into oncoming traffic before turning south onto Marksheffel Road.

CSP’s report states that after this action, Helland worried the chase had the potential to escalate and threaten other drivers’ lives. As seen in the video above, Skaggs turned again into the oncoming lane before continuing his attempts to lose Helland. In response, Helland used his patrol car’s grappler system to loop into the truck’s rear, driver’s side tire, bringing the chase to a safe end.

There were an additional four passengers inside the truck with Skaggs: two underage boys, an 18-year-old woman, and a 22-year-old woman. Three of the passengers were released to a legal guardian, and one minor was taken into custody for Possession of a Firearm.

Skaggs faces several charges including Vehicular Eluding Created a Substantial Risk of Bodily Injury, Reckless Driving, Speeding 25-39 MPH Over, and Driving a Vehicle Without a Valid Driver’s License.
